A chair is a type of everyday furniture, a type of seat with a backrest and armrests. Modern chairs pursue beauty and fashion, and some chairs are no longer just used as seating. With the combination of technology, human life has become more convenient.
There is an image of two people sitting separately on chairs in the mural of Dunhuang Cave 285; There are women sitting on square benches and cross legged benches in the murals of Cave 257; There is a woman sitting on a round stool in the stone carving of Longmen Lotus Cave. These images vividly depict the use of chairs and stools in aristocratic families during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period. Although the seating fixtures at that time had the shape of chairs and stools, due to the lack of titles for chairs and stools at that time, people still used to refer to them as "Hu beds". In temples, they were commonly used for sitting meditation, so they were also called Zen beds. After the Tang Dynasty, the use of chairs gradually increased, and the names of chairs were widely used, which separated them from the category of beds. Therefore, when it comes to the origin of chairs and stools, we must start with the introduction of the Hu bed from India during the Han and Wei dynasties.
Before the Tang Dynasty, there was another explanation for the character "chair", which referred to the fence around a carriage. Its function is to provide a source of support for people when traveling. Later chairs, in the form of a four legged platform with a fence installed, were inspired by the fence next to the car and named after it as "chairs". From existing records, it can be seen that there were already quite elaborate chairs in the Tang Dynasty.
From the Five Dynasties to the Song Dynasty, high-end seating became unprecedentedly popular, and the forms of chairs also increased, such as backrests, armchairs, and circular chairs. According to the different levels of hierarchy, the shape, material, and function of chairs also vary.
Furniture from the Five Dynasties to the Two Song Dynasties generally retained the Tang Dynasty style, but high-end furniture became more popular than before.
The chair is very ancient and simple, although for many centuries it has been in a state of ordinary use. In the early dynasties, they covered the back and surface of chairs with cloth, leather, or wood carvings, but the coverage area was much smaller than that of chairs in the 21st century, and the surface of chairs was sometimes only 25 centimeters above the ground. In ancient Egypt, chairs seemed to have been greatly enriched, with old-fashioned ebony, ivory carvings, gold-plated wood, and other materials being used. They are covered with expensive materials, gorgeous patterns, and hunted beasts or carved prisoner numbers. Generally speaking, the higher the status of an individual, the higher and more luxurious their chair, which is a symbol of honor.
